Dry skin is an often misunderstood, misquoted and misguided topic among beauty circles.

Let us get a few basic facts right.
Dry skin implies that the epidermis (surface layer) of the skin has low water content. This is why people with dry skin often get flaking, peeling and coarseness – this is because the epidermis is not healthy and not well organized and structured.

Dry skin can be a sign of a more serious underlying medical disorder hence you should always consult your doctor for advice.

Dry skin is not always a problem with "lousy moisturizers".

How do we improve dry skin?

Use a gentle cleanser – It is important to avoid harsh or aggressive cleansing because this would strip off the protective layer of lipids and oils on the surface of the skin. (well we need to remove some oil, but not ALL the oil!) If we remove too much oil and surface lipids, there is no longer any "barrier" or "protection" for the skin's deeper layers, and hence water can be lost more easily, leading to dry skin. Over cleansing can also stimulate the skin to produce more oil because the skin is a clever organ – it senses that it has insufficient oily protection on the surface (because you removed so much of it) that it tells itself to produce more oil!

Apply a moisturiser and apply it properly. Ensure that the skin is moist or damp BEFORE applying a moisturizer. Many people do not understand how moisturizers work – moisturizers work by trapping water molecules that are already on the surface of the skin. Moisturisers do not always "add water" into the skin. Therefore if the skin is bone dry, there is no water for a moisturizer to trap, which leads to a poor moisturisation effect.
